Independence in Summer…

Now that full summer is truly upon us, we here at Castle Country are enjoying the warm weather, flowers, grilling and family time. We are encouraging our residents to get outside, take more walks, spend time in our gardens and on the patios, share some drinks and stories with the staff and simply bask in the sun!

Independence is the theme of this month, not only due to our country’s holiday on the 4th, but also because we want our residents to be an active participant in their own lives, keeping their independence as long as they possibly can. One of our main goals as a company is to motivate our residents to live, not merely exist.

We do this in many ways, such as offering a variety of crafts like art therapy and painting classes, group garden walks, an eclectic mix of entertainment and visitors and possibly the most important, our staff. We have incredible staff who care deeply for our residents and show that every single day. Independence Day BBQ
Monday, Jul. 4

12 p.m. we will be serving barbeque to our residents, if you’d like to join at any of our houses please let Katy know as soon as possible! We will be setting off fireworks at our Victorian House that evening as well!

The Organ Grinder
Friday, Jul. 6 – This is a new entertainer who comes with his own organ grinder and a monkey! Not a real one but still, we are excited to welcome him and his unique brand of musical stylings.

Cognitive Art Therapy with Allison
Monday, Jul. 11 and Wednesday Jul. 13 – Cognitive Art Therapy is coming to each of our homes to paint in acrylics with our residents. We are excited to have her! She will be assisting our residents with canvas painting as part of her company’s mission to improve the quality of life for the elderly.

Red Hats Luncheon – Valley House with Dan McClerren on the piano

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Our Valley House will be hosting this months Red Hats Luncheon for our other two houses. We will be entertained by Dan McClerron, one of our favorite piano players!

July Spotlight: Douglas County Seniors Council

The Seniors’ Council of Douglas County is an organization affiliated with the Douglas County Division of Adult Services. The mission of the Seniors’ Council is to promote Living Well/Aging Well for all the residents of our county. They strive to accomplish this by enhancing the quality of life and assuring accessibility through advocacy, education and collaboration. The council membership consists of senior residents, medical and non-medical health care providers, ancillary service providers, government staff and aging professionals dedicated to serving those 60 and older. They meet the first Thursday of each month from 9 am – 11 am at various locations throughout Douglas County. There is no membership fee and the meetings are free and open to the public.

We encourage you to attend one of their meetings to learn more about who they are and how they help empower our older residents. Most recently they have had educational presentations on a variety of topics such as personal safety in the home and in public places, the federal government’s drug approval process, a Douglas County Transit Update, savoring the second half of life and keeping joints healthy. Future meetings will include opportunities to meet political candidates to hear their plans for senior services (September), the introduction of a new senior fire prevention outreach program by the Fire Department (October) and a panel of experts explaining the upcoming changes to Medicare for 2017 (November).
Council members have a direct impact on planning community events, providing legislative input to decision makers, educating the community, reviewing funding proposals and working on special projects promoting the health and safety of our senior residents.
